Lift With Your Legs, Not Your Back: The 9 Steps That Protect You for Life

Back injuries are the single biggest cause of long-term disability in construction, renovation, and property maintenance. They almost always happen for the same three reasons: lifting with the back instead of the legs, rushing, and not asking for help with something heavy. The good news? The right way to lift takes about 30 minutes to learn and protects your body for the rest of your career. Here’s the nine-step sequence we teach in every Site Squad Bootcamp LE cohort.

The 9 steps of safe lifting

  1. Look before you lift. Check the weight, the shape, the grip points, and the path to where it’s going. Walk the route first.
  2. Get close to it. Stand as close to the object as possible. The further it is from your body, the harder your back works.
  3. Feet apart. Shoulder-width apart. Stable base before you begin.
  4. Bend your knees. Squat down to the object. Keep your back straight and your chest up. Don’t hunch forward.
  5. Grip firmly. Use your whole hand, not just your fingers. Gloves help on rough materials.
  6. Lift with your legs. Push through your heels as you stand up. Your legs do the work. Your back stays straight.
  7. Keep it close. Carry the load at hip height, close to your body. The further it sticks out, the more strain.
  8. Move your feet to turn. Never twist your back while holding a load. Pivot by moving your feet.
  9. Set it down the same way. Squat down with your legs. Don’t drop it unless it’s a genuine emergency.

When to call for a team lift

If a load is over 25 kg (55 lbs), or if it’s awkward to grip alone, it’s a team lift. There’s no shame in asking for help. There is real risk in not asking. On a team lift, one person leads and counts: “Ready? Lift on three. One, two, three, lift.” Everyone else follows. Same height, same pace, agreed destination.

Why this is the first physical skill we teach

Tools and techniques you can learn over months. A protected back lets you keep showing up to work for years. This is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy, and it costs nothing but 30 minutes and the discipline to do it the same way every single time.
