Most trades training programs teach the technical work and stop there. Tools, safety, demolition, deck repair, done. We added a 45-minute interview-skills module to Day 1 of the Site Squad Bootcamp LE, and it’s now one of the most-praised parts of the program. Here’s why.
The technical bar for general labour is low
If a renovation, landscaping, or property-maintenance employer is hiring for general labour, they already know you can lift heavy things and follow instructions. What they’re trying to figure out in a 20-minute interview is something else entirely. Will you show up on time? Will you treat the client’s home with respect? Will you be easy to work with on a crew?
Those are the things our participants already have
Many of the people who come through our cohorts have spent years caring for family members, holding down service jobs, navigating systems that aren’t built for them, or showing up reliably under hard circumstances. They’re reliable. They’re easy to work with. They care. The skill they sometimes lack is showing it in a high-pressure conversation with a stranger.
So we practise
The interview module breaks into four parts: how to prepare and arrive (10 minutes early, business casual, not work clothes), the handshake drill (every participant practises with one-on-one feedback), the live mock Q&A on the eight questions employers actually ask, and a closing on how to handle questions you weren’t prepared for.
Accessibility-aware delivery
Not everyone shakes hands comfortably, and not everyone interviews verbally with ease. For participants with sensory or social-anxiety needs, a confident nod with eye contact is accepted in place of a handshake. The mock Q&A can be done in writing first, then read aloud. We meet people where they are.
Why this matters more than tools
If you graduate with a perfect grasp of the Robertson screwdriver but walk out of every job interview without an offer, you don’t get to use that skill. Interview confidence is the bridge between training and a paycheque. For many of our participants, our cohort is the first real job interview they’ve ever practised. By the end of Day 1, it isn’t anymore.
